President of the Senate, Senator David Mark pleaded with the abductors of Professor Mabel Kemene Okonjo, mother of the coordinating minister of economy and minister of finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to unconditionally release her.
In statement signed by special adviser on media to the Senate President, Kola Ologbondiyan and made available to Nigerian Pilot in Abuja, Senator Mark had in a passionate appeal urged the abductors to honour the time-tested biblical injunction that” we honour our parents and by extension those who are old enough to be our parents.”
According to him, “the abduction of any Nigerian is condemnable. The abduction of the mother of a notable Nigerian like Dr Okonjo-Iweala is an attack on the international reputation of our dear country.”
He further added,” Abductors are causing the nation’s reputation grave harm among the comity of nations,” adding that such crimes are not different from the senseless killing being perpetrated by Boko Haram.
Mark urged the Nigerian Police to intensify efforts in securing the release of Prof. Okonjo and bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to book.
